If you love of good wines, Andorra is your next destination. Among its high mountains, wines with different touches and grape varieties are created. Today we introduce you 3 wines of our country and the vineyards where they are born.
Evolució, of la Casa Auvinyà
In the village of Auvinyà, located at 1,200 m above the sea level, is located the Casa Auvinyà. Its 5,000 vines have come to produce 1,500 bottles of wine, both white and red. One of these wines is Evolució, a highly variable red wine, which changes its composition (type of grapes used) or manufacturing process at each harvest, resulting in different notes each year.
Evolució was in 2009, the first red wine of Andorra, after resting 3 months in the barrel and one year in the bottle. This was created with the grape variety Pinot noir, as on the crops of 2011 and 2012. Two years after the first production, it was decided to change the resting time in the bottle to 9 months. In that same year, it was decided to produce a second batch of Evolució, this time with Syrah grapes and resting for 6 months in oak barrels and 1 year in the bottles.
Escol, of la Borda Sabaté
This family project is takes place in a traditional Andorran house of the south of the country, owned by the family Sabaté since 1944. The lands where their wines are made are located between 1,100 and 1,190 meters above the sea level, taking advantage of both the mild climate conditions and its geographic situation.
Escol is one of the wines produced at the most altitude by this winery. The harvest of 2011 resulted in an intense and acid wine and was awarded in 2014 with the Commended Medal at the prestigious wine competition International Wine Challenge. Both the variety of grapes used, 100% Riesling, and the rest period, give this wine fruits and white flowers aroma, with honey touches towards the end.
Cim de Cel, of the Casa Beal
In the vineyards of the Casa Beal, located between 1,050 and 1,100 meters, they use biodynamic winegrowing. This process involves treating the vines with different techniques according to the phases of the moon. Thus they succeeded in producing the Cim Cel wine, the result of the perfect maturation of the fruit and the plant.
After 100 years of the absence of Andorra in the wine market, Cim de Cel, produced from the grape variety Gewürztraminer was the first wine produced in our country. This fresh and flavoured white wine, thanks to his rest at low temperature, has the perfect balance between sugars and acidity. Its particular flavour brings to the table the aroma of exotic fruits and hints of rose petals.
Come to Andorra and taste all the wines produced in its mountains. At the Piolets Park & Hotel, we will arrange your visits to the vineyards, and you can taste some of these wines while you eat and enjoy the mountain views.
