This year everything points to the fact that we can once again enjoy Andorra's king of winter sports: skiing. To make sure you’ll be ready on time, we'll tell you how you can prepare to arrive at your snowy date in the best conditions.
How to take care of your ski equipment to have it ready for December?
It is important to keep your equipment in good condition to avoid injuries and falls. The better you look after it, the longer it will last.
Snowboards and skis:
For optimal maintenance of your boards you need to make sure you remove rust from the edges, align the boards and give them a good waxing. Also check the bindings to make sure the boot fits properly. It is also advisable to have your ski equipment serviced by a professional workshop at least once a year. Of course, this is the most important part, but the rest of the equipment also has to be up to date to avoid last minute surprises.
Here it is important to check the fastenings, that there are no bulges in the boot and that the toe and heel are not too worn. If you are skiing with children, make sure they are still their size.
Sometimes we forget to check them, but they are also an essential part of the equipment. Check that they are not bent or in need of replacing any parts, such as the base, straps and grip.
It's best to try them on before you hit the slopes and discard clothes that are too small or too big, or if you notice they have lost quality. Make the movements you make while skiing to check that it responds well and don't forget to try on thermal clothing as well.
When you try them on you will find out if you can still use them, if they are too stiff or if they feel uncomfortable. If this is the case, the best thing to do is to go to a snow equipment shop and buy new ones.
Check that the foam that protects your face from ski goggles has not lost its sponginess and shape, and that the strap is not worn out. Also check that the lenses or plastic of the goggle are not badly scratched.
Remember that the helmet is a safety feature. If it is not comfortable or if it has suffered a major blow, it is better to replace it with a new one.
Take note that good maintenance starts at the end of the season by keeping all the equipment in the best conditions. On the other hand, you can always buy or rent anything you need for the snow in the ski shop located in the hotel.
What do you need to take into account to prepare yourself physically for skiing?
The previous training that will prevent injuries and will allow you to arrive with a good physical preparation to your appointment with the snow. When skiing, the legs and the central part of the body are the ones that work the hardest, so both strength and endurance exercises are required to strengthen these areas. Do circuit training that strengthens the glutes, quads, hips and ankles as well as the abdominals. Each skier will need to adapt the exercise to the type of discipline. For example, in ski touring, where there are more lifts, so the muscles of the hips and the front of the legs are used the most. To work on posture and balance, it is also advisable to exercise on unstable surfaces such as the bosu and fitball.
Warming up before and stretching after enjoying the snow should also be part of your skiing day. To make it easier for you, you can do these exercises in our hotel's gym.
