On June 5, we are celebrating the World Environment Day, which was created with the aim of raising awareness about the planet and promoting environmental actions. It has been celebrated since 1974, after being recognized by the United Nations in the 1972 Stockholm Convention.
With the aim of promoting individual or social actions and activities to raise awareness of the whole population, from schools, cultural entities and government departments. Each year it deals with a different theme. The theme of World Environment Day 2021 is "Reimagine. Recreate. Restore." as this year marks the beginning of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
This day is also celebrated in Andorra and, in addition, several activities related to sustainability are carried out throughout the year and involve the whole of society. Last year, as part of the Environment Week, there was a competition for environmental proposals, talks with relevant authorities on the matter and an exhibition of the different projects carried out by the children of the country's schools. In September, a photographic competition was held in connection with Mobility Day and in November the week dedicated to waste management took place. Furthermore, Andorra participates in the UN's ODS agenda (Sustainable Development Goals). It deals with 17 objectives related to changing people's lives, applying actions for sustainable growth, to be achieved before 2030.
For us it is very important to preserve the environment, as 90% of our territory is nature: rivers, forests, meadows and lakes. Only 10% becomes built land. A total of 10% of our land has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO since 2004, the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley. If you don't know it yet, we recommend it, for walking and hiking. As well as in the other two natural parks like the Comapedrosa or the Sorteny. Where, apart from visiting the most spectacular natural areas of the Principality, you will also come across protected native flora and fauna.
From Park Piolets Hotel, we also want to contribute to the preservation of our mountains and our environment. So we also carry out environmental measures in our day to day. For example, in terms of recycling, encouraging local purchases or with a recharging point for electric vehicles, among others. With the new rehabilitation of the hotel and our mountain spa, we have applied sustainability criteria in terms of being more energy efficient. Discover our environmental commitment and the details of all the actions we carry out to be more respectful with the planet.
Happy Environment Day!
